CHAPTER 10

Daiki couldn't wait to get home and tell his mother how his appointment with the obstetrician had gone, how excited Takaki had seemed, but the instant he walked into the house and saw his mother's pale, worried face, the way that she was shaking uncontrollably, everything else went out of his head.

He crossed the room in seconds, his heart pounding.

“What's the matter?”

His mother is so pale and he feared that she was about to suffer a heart attack.

“I'll call the doctor!”

His hand went towards the phone, but his mother stopped him. “He's been here.”

“Again?” He knew very well who his mother meant, and his heart raced in fear. “Why? What does he want now?” Okamoto's visits were becoming too far frequent for Daiki's peace of mind, and he was afraid that all the worry would affect his baby.

His mother made an unreadable face. “He's seen Takaki coming and going more often lately. He knows he's rich, he's upping the payment again.”

When his mother mentioned by how much the increase, he can''t helped but gasped. “Bu that's more than I earn! He can't do that! What did you tell him?” He feared that their nightmare was never going to end.

“That our situation hasn’t changed. Not that he believed me.”

“You shouldn't have opened the door to him.”

“I didn't know it was him,” said his mother with pain in her eyes. “I thought it was you and that you'd forgotten your keys. He pushed his way in, Daiki. I was so afraid.”

“We need to call the police,” said Daiki at once. “He can't do this. It's gone too far.”

“The police can't do anything Daiki,” his mother said, fear evident in her voice. “The contract he has is legal remember? He'll deny using threats against us and it will be our word against his..but there might be a solution.” she added, looking at his son hopefully. “You could ask Takaki-kun to lend us money so we can get rid of Okamoto-san once and for all.”

“Ask Yuya?” Daiki closed his eyes and shook his head. Getting pregnant by him was embarrassing enough and to ask for money to solve their personal problems would be step too far.

“I feel so foolish for having let it get this far and I hate that I have involved you, but I don't think my heart can stand much anymore.”

Tears filled his mother's eyes now and Daiki held his mother close. To ask Takaki would be painful and humiliating in the extreme and yet his mother was right, Takaki can help them. The loan shark wouldn't follow them and ask for payments. It would be fair deal. They would know exactly where they stood, but it was still an awful lot to ask for help of Takaki. The latter one only just got over the shock of the baby.

“You could tell him that it's to buy stuffs for the baby.” said his mother. “Men have no idea how much things cost, so I'm sure he won't ask questions.”

The amount he needed to borrow would buy an awful lot of baby things thought Daiki, but because his mother still looked pale and fragile, his breathing difficult, as though she was indeed on the a verge of a heart attack, Daiki finally reluctantly nodded. “Very well, I'll ask him.”

His mother's relief was instant ans dome of the color returned to his face. “You're a good son Daiki, and I'm sorry to have burden you with this.”

It was going to be the hardest thing he ever going have to do, telling Takaki he's pregnant would be nothing compared to this.

When he went to work the next morning he went straight into Takaki's office. It's no good that the latter is sitting and thinking about something, but he had to ask Takaki immediately.

“What's wrong?” Takaki's eyes scanned Daiki. “You look pale and you're not feeling well? If that's the case you shouldn't come to work.”

Takaki looked so concerned, so very concerned that Daiki almost backed out. How could he do this? But seeing his mother's pale face and unhealthy figure in his mind is like a warning that he have to do this.

“I'm all right,” Daiki insisted. “It's just that I need to ask you a favor, a very big one.” His heart raced, thumping so hard that it was like it's trying to burst from his chest.

“Ask now,” Takaki said. “Is it something to do with your mother? I though she didn't look well the last time I saw her.”

“I... I need money Yuya.” Daiki said, not answering the question. “I wouldn't ask if it wasn't necessary.” He forced himself to look to Takaki, he doesn't want the latter to figure out how hard this is for him. He had stay awake for the whole time worrying and his mother's health is at stake here. He was left with no choice, it was either asking Takaki for help or ending up losing his home or mother, possibly both.

“But of course, what was I thinking? You need to buy things for the baby.”

Relief flooded him that he didn't have to actually lie. “You've no idea how much they cost these days.” How could he sound normal is a mystery for him, but deep down, he's hurting himself, he's so afraid and completely dead.

“I will open a bank account for you at once. Shall we say 5 million yen?”

Daiki closed his eyes, how could he tell Takaki that was not enough? That he wanted five times the amount. It was difficult to comprehend how his father borrowed that large amount using his mother's name, but it had, the interest had piled up as if they didn't pay. There's no one else he can ask for help except Takaki.

When Takaki lifted his chin, he shuddered, opening his eyes, feeling his throat dried. “What's wrong my Daiki?”

“It's not enough.” Daiki replied.

Daiki felt his body grew tense, even though Takaki's expression didn't change.

“Not enough? Tell me what you're going to buy this baby of ours?”

The change in the tone of Takaki worried him.

“Various things, clothes, shoes and all sort that the baby needs. Also I'll turn one of the room in my house as a nursery and I need to buy furniture for him, all in all, I need 25 million yen.”

Takaki looked long and hard into Daiki's eyes, making Daiki wished he's not here in front of the latter. Never in his life had he felt this embarrassed and uncomfortable as he did at the moment. He had promised his mother and he had to do this.

“And do you really think I believe that's how much things for a baby cost? Takaki asked, his voice loud. “I would guess...” his fingers dug deeply into Daiki's Arms, bruising, hurting, but Daiki didn't flinch. “...this is for your own personal gain. Am I right?”

Takaki's eyes etch anger and Daiki felt his insides begin to shiver, but he couldn't let his mother down.

“You may think what you like Yuya, but I am not in the habit of begging for money without a cause.”

Takaki hated the way he was thinking, but it very much looked as though Daiki had a taste of the high life and found that he liked it. It was not that he minded giving Daiki money for his unborn child, but he didn't like being taken as a fool.

The memories of Yuri flooded through him, the hurtful past of him. What if Daiki like Yuri, is pushing a baby that's not his? He saw Daiki once with a man and that young man being his mother's friend is questionable. He's been suspicious for all time, but he choose to believe Daiki He truly thought that Daiki was different. Damn it, he supposed to ask Daiki to marry him.

Daiki was looking at Takaki now as though he wished that he never asked. Takaki's disappointment was evident in his face.

“And that cause would be?” Takaki asked grimly, hoping that he once again jumped into wrong conclusion.
“I can’t tell you Yuya…” Daiki low down his head, hiding the shame that he’s feeling.

“You can’t or you don’t want to?”  Takaki let his eyes rest on Daiki’s face for several seconds, and when there was no answer, when the latter refused to look at him in the eye, when the latter looked miserably down at his feet instead, he said sadly, “Let me tell you what I think Daiki. I think you’re trying to play me for a fool. I think you’re using the baby you’re carrying for financial gain, I think you’re trying to trick me as Yuri did to me, and…”

“How dare you?” Anger immediately became visible in Daiki’s eyes. “I would never do a thing like that. This is your baby and you’d better believe it. Forget about the money Yuya. I can see that it was a mistake asking for your help.”

Takaki looked into Daiki’s face, seeing a mixture of both anger and despair, for some reason it created deep unease inside him. What he should be doing now was kicking Daiki out his life, instead he found himself making a proposition.

“I will give you the money…but on one condition… You move in with me permanently.” He might be crazy suggesting it, but he couldn’t easily let Daiki go. Despite his disappointment that the latter had tried to make money out of the situation, Daiki still got a big impact to him. He was convinced that there’s something else going on here and he was determined to get to the bottom of it. Why did Daiki want so much money? There’s only one way to find out and that was to keep the latter as close to him as possible.

“Move in with you?” For just a moment hope suddenly surpass the emotions of Daiki. Hadn’t he wanted this all along? To live in with Takaki? To have a future with him? But as he saw the coldness in Takaki’s eyes, he saw that the latter’s not offering him a future, he was offering him prison. Takaki would own him in return for the money. Would men always be in control of his life? First his father, then the loan shark and now Takaki. If he accepted Takaki’s offer of the money, he might be free from Okamoto but Takaki will be the one to replace him. He knew what his answer must be.

“I can’t do that Yuya.”

Takaki thought for a moment. Daiki’s answer had confused him. If the latter moved in with him, then he would be given exactly the kind of lifestyle he wanted, a life that he doesn’t have now. So why was Daiki turning his offer down? Did Daiki need the money for another purpose than funding his lifestyle? What was Daiki keeping from him?

He couldn’t help wondering whether Daiki’s mother was in the act too. The moment the though entered his mind, he put it into words.

“Does your mother know about this request of money? Is she part of this let’s see what we can get out of Takaki-kun’s plan?” The way Daiki flinched, the way he averted his eyes, looking anywhere but at him, the way Daiki paled, told him exactly what he wanted to know.

Disappointed flooded him, he felt as though someone had slice his heart into two. The once innocent Daiki, his PA who had served him, the quiet and adorable Daiki had turned into a carbon copy of every person he dated.

If it wasn’t for the fact that the latter was carrying his baby, he would send Daiki home and fire him. He might do many cruel things to him now. He would tell Daiki that he’ll not get any money for their child, not until he find out what’s the reason Daiki wants money so much.

“I’m sorry I asked.” Daiki had never felt so humiliated in his life. The look in Takaki’s eyes made him wants to turn and run and never see the latter again. He had known all along that it would be a bad idea asking Tkaki for money, but he never expected it to turn out like this. He had hoped that Takaki would simply hand over the cash with no questions or what. He forgot that this is Takaki Yuya, businessman extraordinaire! Once again Daiki realized how badly he had misjudged Takaki’s feelings towards him.

“And I’m sorry you asked too,” Takaki said, the calmness in his voice was more dangerous than the raised one. “Shall we start work?”

Daiki would have liked nothing more than to turn around and run. He had embarrassed himself for nothing. He wanted to walk out of the office and never see Takaki again, but that would mean losing his job, and he couldn’t afford it, especially now. He wasn’t sure though how he’s going to get through the rest of the day. At least it was Friday, so he would have weekend to try to forget things.

The atmosphere between them was cold as ice and it’s a relief that Takaki left early. When he got home and told his mother that Takaki refused to lend them money, and the consequences that he needs to live with Takaki, his mother can’t help but broke down in tears.

“What are we going to do now?”

Fearing for his mother’s health, Daiki put his arms around her and held her close. “We’re going to forget about it for the time being. I’ll make us a nice cup of tea and we’ll watch TV and push Takaki, Okamoto and others right out of our minds.”

It was easier said than done, but at least his mother calmed down, and on Saturday night, Daiki brought his mother out of the house so they can relax.

They had a good day, Daiki even managed to forget about Takaki. He had spent the whole night tossing and turning, remembering his humiliation. Deep down inside, he knew he can’t blame Takaki for refusing to give him money since he hadn’t told the truth to the latter. It was ridiculous to have expected Takaki to believe that it was all for the baby.

His mother’s health is his number one priority. His mother was a private woman who kept everything for herself. She had always hidden from their neighbors the way that her husband threatens both her and her son. Over the years their neighbors got used to it.

And so Daiki felt that it was only right that he respect his mother’s privacy even though it had made it hard asking Takaki for help. He could still feel the deep humiliation he had done. He had wanted to run and never see Takaki, but he knows he can’t, he needs the job for his mother and baby, also how can he repay the debt if he leave his job. He refused to think about their debt, his main concern is his mother, and for her sake, he’ll need to keep bright and cheerful.

Except “bright and cheerful” flew out of the window when Okamoto decided to pay them another visit. He and his mother gad a good day at the shops, even buying only the cheapest of baby clothes had lifted their spirits and they had been in a good mood when they arrived home.

It was early evening when the doorbell rang and unsuspectingly Daiki went to open the door, only to be confronted by the man who he despises seeing the most. Quickly, Daiki stepped outside and closed the door behind him so that his mother wouldn’t know who stood there.

“Do you have the money?” Okamoto growled.

“If you mean can I give you any more than we are already doing, then the answer is no,” said Daiki bravely, even though inside he was shivering in fear. He knew this man can use force just to get what he wanted. “And if you don’t stop harassing us, I shall call the police.”

His brave words had no effect to Okamoto. Okamoto grinned to him maliciously, his eyes narrowed as if he wanted to kill the person in front of him “This is a legitimate loan, there’s nothing that they can do.”

“But you can’t keep upping the payment or threatening us in this way.” Daiki felt that his protest was in vain, but he had t tru something. “We can’t pay you money we haven’t got.”

“You’re forgetting the rich boyfriend of yours.” Okamoto moves closer to Daiki, blowing smoke on the latter’s face. “Don’t think I haven’t seen you with him. What I’m asking for was like a coin to his eyes. Ask him for it.”

“I can’t do that,” Daiki declared, surprised to hear his voice still coming out strong and steady when all hell was still breaking out in his body. His heart was thumping like a mad thing and every pulsed of him fasten. “I refuse t involve someone else in your fraud. The only people I’m prepared to go to are the police.”

Strong hands gripped Daiki’s shoulder and Okamoto slapped him. “I want my money.”

And Daiki wanted Okamoto to leave him alone. He pushed as hard as he could against the latter’s chest and Okamoto let him go, but not before he made a further threat. “I’ll come back every day until I get what I want. You’d better believe it.”

“And if you do that I’ll definitely go to the police and you’d better believe that!”

Not until the door was safely shut behind him did Daiki feel safe. He leaned his back against it, breathing deeply, forcing himself to calm down before he faced his mother again.
